You can see the finish line… you're nearly there and then the chair
passes you and wins the race! Yes, Furniture Racing is one of the
ten wacky sports you can play on this new game from SEGA. Other
sports include Tuna Tossing, Cheese Rolling, Lawn Mower Racing and
my favourite, Fierljeppen.
When
the opening screen starts you are introduced to the commentator,
a quirky looking guy in a crazy outfit. There are several options
to choose from including: Tour Mode (Single), Party Mode (Multiplayer),
Rankings and Shop. On the left of the screen there is a box which
gives you the option of changing the length you want to play in;
either Meters of Yards.
Going
into Tour Mode, the first location is the Norland Tour. The objective
is to complete two preliminary games and then you will be able to
play the almighty boss, Algernon. During the Tour you will play
against three other opponents who will always seem to do extremely
well in the events, so you will always have to make good scores.
Unfortunately there is no room for mistakes! There are four characters
to choose from including; Tiffany Cerise, Jack Lumber (Yes, he is
dressed as a lumberjack!), Mia Brandor and Sasuke Lee. A unique
feature is you're able to add your own Mii masks to the characters
but it does look a bit strange!
The
first event is Fierljeppen, which means 'to leap'. The controls
are very confusing to understand when you first play but they show
you instructions as you play; you move the controller Up & Down
to run, and then hit the B button to jump onto the pole. When you
are on the pole you shake the controller Up & Down making sure not
to tilt otherwise your rope will start leaning. When you are at
the right angle you hit the B button and you will fly into the air,
hopefully landing in a comfortable position. This event kept me
very entertained because if you don't jump at the right angle you
will land face first and they replay each jump you make. After each
of your turns you will be able to watch the other three competitors
take their turn. In my opinion this makes the game drag a bit but
you do have the option to skip their performances with the B button.
Three tries later the scores will be tallied and you will gain points
depending on how well you have done. The points go as followed:
1st place - 500 points, 2nd place - 400 points, 3rd place - 300
points and 4th place - 200 points.
Onto
the next event which is Log Cutting. As unexciting as it sounds,
the game is actually quite enjoyable. Before the game starts you
are able to read thorough instructions and find out quirky little
facts about the sport. Brief instructions are also shown while the
game is being loaded. The controls are straight forward; when the
log is on its side you hold B and swing Left & Right and when the
log is upwards you swing Up & Down. There are bombs that sneak up
sometimes but you just swing Left & Right and the bomb will be thrown
onto the opponent next to you. If you get a rhythm going you build
up points in an Attack Meter which can be used to stun all the opponents.
This event is compelling but it goes a bit quick and because all
the players are bunched together it is fairly hard to see what you
are doing.
The
last event is Cheese Rolling and I thought it was insanely hard
and annoying! The player with the lowest points gets replaced with
Algernon - the boss of the tour. Even if you cannot beat him you
still are able to unlock two more tours. Also no matter how good
or bad you did, the points you obtained while playing turn into
gold that you can spend in the shop. The shop, Gerbillus' Sports
Emporium supplies new equipment which can hopefully help you play
better in the events. Each piece of equipment has four characteristics;
Power, Speed, Technique and Intelligence. For example, you can buy
the Big Bad Axe from the shop. This axe has full power so you are
able to hit the logs in one hit. Although to be honest these characteristics
only matter in the events you have patience to keep playing.
Moving
onto Party Mode, where you and up to four players can play against
each other. You are able to choose from Free play (Single Game)
to Circuit (Many Games). In Circuit Mode you can choose up to five
games or let the computer choose Random games for you. Unfortunately
if you have not unlocked new games in Tour Mode then you are stuck
with the first three games available which are Fierljeppen, Furniture
Racing and Tuna Tossing. Games like Tuna Tossing and Furniture Racing
also have different scenes to unlock. Furniture Racing is a fun
one to play but I felt the scenes available are a bit difficult
to race on. Unfortunately my Dad felt it all too confusing and gave
up after about ten minutes of playing, so I wouldn't recommend this
title as one for you and the family, haha!
Once
you have unlocked more events the game becomes more entertaining
with events like Lawn Mower Racing and Card Boxing. Extreme Ironing
has a good concept, reminding me of the Dance Revolution games but
who actually thought ironing would be fun to play; I don't even
want to iron in real life let alone in a game! The last two games
to mention are Ice Gold and Mud Sliding which are average playable
games. The graphics for all the games are styled very well and the
characters are very fun and enjoyable. A good thought has to come
with a bad one though as I cannot say many good things for the sound
effects. The music during the games was fun and in style with the
game but I had to mute my television at the annoying 'Yeah' effects
made EVERY time you hit something in the selection screens.
Wacky
World Sports is one of those games that you like and don't like.
Good graphics, fun and enjoyable characters… some flimsy games and
terrible sound effects. This game reminds me of Carnival Games where
you wished so much for the game to be good but it did not live up
to its great title. The only reason I would play it again is for
some of the more pleasing games like Furniture Racing and Fierljeppen.
Seeing the price tag though it might be worth the buy, but you could
just save up the pennies and wait to buy some of the better Sports
packages.
