Killer robots are on the loose and tearing US cities apart, making
a mockery of the military who are powerless to stop them. Enter
one of Project H.A.M.M.E.R's cyborgs - half man, half machine and
wielding a supersized weapon, it looks like you are the only one
who can save the world. Bring it on!
Judging
from the limited storyline that's been released, Project H.A.M.M.E.R's
levels will probably consist of liberating US cities, smashing groups
of enemy robots to pieces in order to secure that particular city
or area. As a game that looks, and is reported to feel, simplistic
(in a good way!) it's unlikely to have an overly complex story behind
it, so you can probably expect to enjoy your robot bashing without
the distraction of complicated plots and characters! Players can
look forward to some attractive environments and destructible objects
as they make their way through what we expect to be recognisable
yet futuristic cityscapes. The demo level was reported to be fairly
short and linear, so we can expect levels in the finished article
to be much the same.
Using
a third person perspective, players will control the hammer via
the motion sensitive Wii Remote while manoeuvring the cyborg with
the Nunchuk controller. Swinging the remote will swing the hammer,
while lifting it up and slamming it down will make the hammer smash
down on your enemies' heads. Numerous special moves will be possible,
including spinning attacks, running charges, a lock on capability
and charging the hammer up; however, while we are promised to be
able to "use the Wii Remote…just like a real hammer," play tests
of the demo at E3 reveal that this is not the case. Rather than
wielding the hammer as though you were holding the handle itself,
movements of the controller are attached to pre-scripted and pre-animated
attacks. While this allows for pre-determined combos and special
moves to be more easily incorporated, and probably, makes for a
generally easier gameplay experience, it is nevertheless disappointing
that we won't yet be able to have total control over a melee weapon
via the Wii remote. While this is a disappointment, it's by no means
devastating news and shouldn't turn people away from what is otherwise
shaping up to be a promising game.
Project
H.A.M.M.E.R. undoubtedly looks like a fun game with fast paced action
and some awesomely destructive moves, but so far it looks as though
it could just as easily be transported onto the Gamecube. Despite
this it, looks like a title that will hopefully come with a cooperative
mode and it is reminiscent of Spartan:
Total Warrior, which is by no means a bad thing. and if swinging
a giant mallet at robots is as fun as swinging one at Romans then
it should be a great game! With so few confirmed details and only
a short, and by no means polished, demo available at E3, it is difficult
to know what to make of Project H.A.M.M.E.R., but rest assured that
AceGamez will be here to give you the full review upon release.
