You've got to hand it to Relentless Software; when they know they're
onto a good thing they just go right on making it better. Ever since
the first Buzz! game made its debut onto the PS2 in 2005, console
gamers have embraced the franchise with both open arms and, more
importantly, open wallets.
The
game's disarmingly charming presentation, quick fire humour and
light hearted take on the quiz genre came as a welcome breath of
fresh air in a market saturated by photo realistic visuals, often
questionable language and ever increasing buckets of gore. The previous
sentence might come as no-brainer to anyone familiar with the phrase
'casual gaming', but, remember, this was before the Wii was let
loose on the world. In fact, you could argue that games like Buzz!
were the necessary precursors to the casual gaming evolution and,
ironically, helped pave the way for Nintendo's dominance of the
charts. However, that's a story for another day; the question we're
tussling with is what now for Relentless in the next gen era?
Well,
it seems that the answer to this puzzle has been answered by the
time worn adage, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". The Brighton-based
development house has wisely taken the core gameplay elements that
have endeared Buzz! to the world and dressed it up a brand new shiny
suit. Certainly, Buzz!: Quiz TV shows signs of some tinkering with
the cosmetics. The nail biting Point Stealer (a section of the game
guaranteed to break up any happy home) has been replaced by an elevated
stand and trap door challenge. We now have pies to throw in the
faces of our hapless opponents and players can now gamble their
points on their ability to answer the next question.
While
Quiz TV is essentially the same offline experience as its predecessors,
this is a game that many felt was destined to be among the line-up
of the PS3's launch titles and Relentless has done well to take
advantage of the opportunities presented by technology's steady
march. As this is a Blu-Ray release, Quiz TV comes brandishing no
less than 5,000 questions, divided into five channels: Music, Movies
and TV, Sports, Knowledge, and Lifestyle - and you can opt to only
answer questions from a certain channel or a mix taken from all
five. Graphically, everything has been gone over with a spit and
polish that your granny would be proud of; the maestro of mayhem,
Buzz himself, looks sharper and better animated than ever - this
is, after-all a high definition offering. Relentless has also provided
a number of great avatars and a selection of costumes to choose
from. My favourite contestant varies between the superhero combination
of The Flash and Superman and, ahem, the Kyle Minogue look and sound-alike.
The psychologists might draw their own conclusions from that admission
but I insist that it's all in the best possible taste. Honest.
The
in-game audio is replete with sniggering, cheers and applause from
the studio audience, tongue in cheek quips from the contestants
and, quite naturally, jibes from the main man himself. And talking
of the main talent, fans will be glad to know that your mum's favourite
Antipodean, Jason Donavan, makes a welcome comeback to reprise his
role as the eponymous quiz show host. All as expected.
As
with previous offerings in the series, an average game will take
some twenty to thirty minutes to get through. This might sound like
the offline experience is over very fast, but with the large number
of questions available there's literally months of replay value
here, as you're unlikely to hear the same question twice.
if
you're looking for something really new in this offering of the
Buzz! saga then you're going to have to sign into the PlayStation
Network, as for the first time ever you can now take Buzz! online
and pit your wits against the whole world. Although Call
of Duty 4 remains the unchallenged monarch of the online shooters,
Buzz! has every possibility of being crowned king of online casual
gaming. Once online, not only can you challenge players from across
the globe, but you can also write your own questions and post them
online! You can also search for and download the latest quizzes
straight into your hard drive. This is real innovation in the sub-genre
and fantastic use of the PS3's online potential; Relentless has
made sure to tick all of the right boxes when it comes to harnessing
the power of the Internet to create a fun and challenging game that
can now last indefinitely - and for that we have to salute them.
So
we're back to that question once again: should you buy Buzz!: Quiz
TV? Well, if you enjoy testing your trivial quiz knowledge against
all-comers, posting brain teasers online and keeping an eye on just
how well everyone else is scoring from all over the world then you're
sure to love this game. You already know whether or not it's the
type of game that interests you, all you needed to know is that
it's worth a look - and now you have a resounding "yes" as the answer.
It's not often we get a chance to review a game that delivers all
it has promised and just a little bit more, but Buzz! Quiz TV is
absolutely one of those games.
